Others

It’s understandable that many people don’t know how to make loose leaf tea, after all, the teabag has been so prevalent in society for so long now, that preparing loose leaf tea seems like a bit of a waste of time. However we’re here to tell you that’s not the case and that it’s by far the best way to enjoy a nice cuppa tea.

It’s much easier to brew a pot of loose leaf tea than you think too. First of all, you need to ensure that the ratio of water to tea is just right. We find that around 5g of tea for every 400ml of water does the trick.

One distinction to remember with loose leaf tea is that if you prefer a stronger tea, not to brew it for longer like you might with a teabag, as that’ll just make it taste bitter. Instead add another scoop of tea instead.

When it comes to brewing the tea itself, we suggest using a roomy teapot that filters the tea when you pour it into your cup. Rather than teapots that have filter baskets as they actually restrict the tea’s ability to absorb the water as much, resulting in less flavour.

As for the temperature, different types of teas actually require different temperatures to produce the best results. For example, black teas need 100 degree water to brew, whilst green teas need a lower temperature of 85 degrees, if brewed too hot, they’ll taste too bitter.

Once your loose leaf tea is brewing, it’s best to kick back, relax and let it do its thing. No stirring or fiddling with the leaves, just let your tea brew and maybe get the biscuits out in preparation.

Many loose leaf teas are best enjoyed without any added ingredients such as milk or sugar, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add them if you desire. Our loose leaf teas can be enjoyed with or without milk, with some teas ‘best’ enjoyed without milk and others that are still great if you are partial to a splash of milk.

If you’re wanting to enjoy the pleasures of loose leaf tea and you don’t have an infuser at hand, why not use the traditional Chinese blowing technique? Simply place the loose leaf tea into your cup and pour your water directly into the cup. Once you’ve left it to brew and you’re ready to enjoy your cuppa, simply blow as you are about to take each sip. This will push the leaves away from your mouth and to the bottom of the cup, ensuring you won’t swallow them.

Unfortunately loose leaf tea does lose its freshness, aroma and flavour over time, but how long does it take before it’s no longer at its best?

It all depends on how it’s stored and what type of tea it is, however generally, most loose leaf teas are most flavourful from 12 to 24 months. This is when they retain most of their flavour and aroma. Whilst loose leaf tea is certainly safe to consume after 24 months, the chances are that it won’t be anywhere near as flavourful, so it’s best to enjoy loose leaf tea before that point.

However there are some loose leaf teas that have either shorter or longer ‘shelf lives’, for example, some green and white teas are best consumed before 12 months due to their minimal oxidation. Whilst Black and Oolong teas can actually retain their flavour and aroma beyond 24 months due to the more extensive oxidation that they go through.

No matter the type of loose leaf tea, it’s important to store them correctly though. As many elements such as moisture, air, light and temperature can all have an effect on the quality of the tea. It’s important to store loose leaf tea in airtight, non-porous and opaque containers such as ceramic jars or tins with tight seals. Taking these steps will help to ensure that your loose leaf tea stays fresher for longer.

Tea bags are great, they’re convenient, you can easily find your favourites in the supermarket and they allow you to enjoy a cuppa in no time. However there’s nothing like the taste and experience when drinking traditional loose leaf tea.

The taste that comes out of the larger leaves present in loose leaf tea is much more intense and flavourful than the small leaves present in tea bags. Plus, tea leaves need room to breathe to actually provide the flavours that they’re capable of. Being free of the cramped tea bag, loose leaf tea has plenty of room to absorb the water, which results in a really flavourful brew.

So whilst tea bags are convenient and an easy way to enjoy a cuppa in no time, loose leaf teas are the traditional and more flavourful way to enjoy a cup of tea.
